Not all companies are accountable for their upstream supply chain, but we feel that it is important and right that we are. We don’t want any grey areas in our sustainability credentials so we will leave no stone unturned until we’re satisfied that we can guarantee that our process is sustainable right the way through from seed to plate.
Substrate
As you may know, we grow our products on vertical stacks in controlled environments using Aquaponic, hydroponic irrigation to water our crops. This means there’s no more soil. We have tried our best to find a sustainable alternative to soil which is why we chose to grow our crop on substrate made from recycled 80% wool-rich virgin carpet off cuts that would have otherwise gone to landfill. However, the substrate cannot currently be reused, recycled or composted. We know that’s not so great so our teams are presently working with different organic and fully compostable growing substrates to find out what works best for cultivation without compromising food safety, quality and hygiene. They are aiming to transition us to an organic compostable material pretty soon. We will keep you posted!
We don’t want any grey areas in our sustainability credentials so we will leave no stone unturned.
Nutrient
We are currently reviewing the origin and nature of all our nutrients, to ensure that we are making the best choice available to us in terms of both quality and sustainability.
Seeds
Seeds are literally the very start of the process, so we’re going back to the beginning and making sure that they’re green from the very start. To do so, we’re reviewing the journey taken by them to see exactly where they come from and how far they travel to get to us.
